National Key R&D Program Project "New Technology of Ethylene Carbonate Hydrogenation to Produce Ethylene Glycol and Methanol in Parallel" Passes the Pilot Test Assessment& a Review of the 100,000-ton Process Package
2021-05-07

Recently, the pilot project "New Technology of Ethylene Carbonate Hydrogenation to Produce Ethylene Glycol and Methanol in Parallel," led by Wison Engineering, successfully passed the 72-hour continuous full-load operation performance assessment and the review of the basic data process package for a 100,000-ton scale. This marks the timely and high-quality completion of the first national science and technology program research task undertaken by Wison Engineering.

The project is part of the key special program "New Technology for Efficient Synthesis of Important Chemicals from CO2" under the National Key R&D Program "Clean and Efficient Utilization of Coal and New Energy-Saving Technologies". It was approved in 2018, with Wison Engineering leading the implementation in collaboration with Tianjin University and East China University of Science and Technology. The project focuses on key technologies for the efficient synthesis of chemicals from CO2, conducting catalytic macrokinetics research on the reaction process of CO2 hydrogenation to produce ethylene glycol and methanol, reactor development, process optimization, and obtaining experimental data through the design, construction, and operation of a thousand-ton pilot plant, as well as developing the core process technology package for a 100,000-ton scale industrial plant for the hydrogenation synthesis of ethylene carbonate to produce ethylene glycol and methanol.

After more than two years of research and development and engineering transformation, under the guidance of the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wison Engineering, in close cooperation with participating units, has successfully built a thousand-ton ester hydrogenation pilot plant and completed a 72-hour continuous full-load operation performance assessment. The results of the pilot operation show that the technology meets or exceeds the requirements in key operation indicators such as raw material conversion rate, hydrogen/ester ratio, product selectivity, and space-time yield. The participating experts have commended the pilot test results and unanimously recommended the accelerated implementation of the new technology to promote sustainable innovative production technology for the industry's green and low-carbon development.

The successful completion of the research tasks of the national key R&D program is an important milestone for Wison Engineering in deepening technological innovation and actively practicing a green development path, indicating that the company has the technical R&D and new technology engineering capabilities to address the country's major technological needs. In the future, it will further contribute to the early realization of China's grand strategic goal of "peak carbon and carbon neutrality" in the chemical industry.
